How do I hand a task to AI if I cannot write code?
Organize collaboration around goals, boundaries, evidence and acceptance, starting with one small result you can check.

Direct answer
Treat AI as a collaborator that can execute tasks and also misunderstand them. You remain responsible for the problem, tradeoffs and acceptance; AI can help investigate, implement and check. Choose a task whose result you understand, then repeat a clear cycle: describe the goal, inspect the current state, act, and verify. An IDE, a command line and a desktop workbench are different interfaces. Fluency in one does not replace business judgment, and you do not need every tool installed before starting.
Practical suggestion: keep a recoverable version for each round and review the diff before continuing. When learning an unfamiliar concept, ask for an explanation through an actual project file and one user action, rather than memorizing isolated terms.
When to use
- You are asking AI to change a real project for the first time.
- You can generate a page but do not know how to assign the next task.
Step by step
Describe one complete user action
Explain who opens which page, what they enter, what result they need and what currently goes wrong. A request for a sophisticated website gives too little direction. Supply relevant screenshots, files and actual errors so AI does not invent the existing implementation.
Ask it to inspect the current project
Confirm the directory, startup method, relevant implementation and existing changes; record unknowns explicitly. Start a new project with a working minimal prototype. In an existing project, keep its stack unless a real requirement justifies changing it.
Agree on boundaries and acceptance
State the functions in scope, extensions out of scope and data that must be protected. Replace vague words such as beautiful or intelligent with observable outcomes: no horizontal overflow on a phone, an explanation for empty input and a retry path after failure.
Advance in small feedback loops
Work toward one independently checkable outcome at a time. When correcting a result, describe actual behavior, expected behavior and reproduction steps. Review the plan for a consequential change; a clear small change does not need repeated ceremonial approval.
Walk through the critical path yourself
Ask what changed, which checks ran and what failed, then perform the user action. An open page does not prove an API returned useful data, and a tool reporting completion is not business acceptance.
Compare interfaces using the same task
List the material to read, software to operate, and ways to inspect diffs and results. Give each candidate the same input and acceptance criteria; record quality, failures, manual takeovers, elapsed time and actual cost. CLI, IDE, desktop and messaging interfaces are entry points; capability depends on models, tools and permissions. A web prototype can be commercially useful, and learning the terminal is not a universal prerequisite. Check subscription entitlements, third-party model support and API billing separately in each product’s official documentation.
Translate terminal commands into observable work
Before execution, ask for the working directory, purpose, read/write effects and expected result, using the project’s established commands. Distinguish a running process from one waiting for input, exiting with an error or completing. Confirm a missing path instead of expanding permissions to bypass an error. Record how to start, locate outputs and stop, then verify the business result in the interface or output file.
Understand documentation and verify against the official text
Ask for an outline, identify an unclear sentence or diagram, connect it to the current project, then check the official documentation’s prerequisites and try a minimal application. Mark unread sections as unchecked; model confidence is not documentary evidence. For a large reading task, maintain a file and section inventory and report the actual coverage.
Separate conversation housekeeping, rollback and version control
Clearing or compacting a conversation changes its context; it does not undo disk changes or external actions. Claude Code checkpointing provides session-level recovery for tracked file edits, with limits for changes made through tools such as Bash; it does not replace version control. Save a recoverable version before important changes. Before restoring, list affected files, databases and already-sent messages, then verify each recovery separately.
Worked example
Hypothetical exercise: a demand-recording form
To record interview leads, first ask for an anonymous name, a problem description, an evidence reference and saving. Verify creation and reading after refresh before adding filters. Do not begin with a CRM, team permissions, automated marketing and payments. The smaller scope makes a failure easier to locate.

Existing behavior and data that must survive:
Acceptance criteria:
Read the relevant implementation first. Identify missing information that changes the goal; use reasonable defaults for the rest. After implementation, report actual checks, results and remaining work.
Reading official documentation with AI
Documentation link, version and date:
My actual task:
1. Outline the sections and separate essential reading from reference.
2. The sentence, diagram or section I do not understand:
3. Explain it in this project; separate documented statements, inference and invented examples.
4. Check the official documentation for versions, prerequisites, limitations and unread parts.
5. Minimal application: input → action → expected output → observed evidence.
6. Questions and claims still not understood or verified:

Pitfalls
- Being unable to handwrite code does not remove the need to understand a running result.
- Features, plans, commands and prices change; check current official documentation before relying on them.
- Full access should not be the default way to improve efficiency.
- Documentation for a product’s Claude Code integration does not prove compatibility with Cowork or another client. Similar installation directories do not establish equivalent capabilities.
