GEO and AEO: How can content be useful to AI search?
Make answers readable and evidence checkable, then distinguish citations from business value.
On this page
Direct answer
GEO and AEO discuss how content is discovered, used or cited in answer-oriented and generative search. Direct answers, clear structure, credible evidence and genuine external discussion help readers, but do not guarantee citation rates. One AI response is not a stable ranking. The linked Google documentation applies ordinary SEO foundations without a special AI file or dedicated markup. Its scope is the documented Google search features; recheck before applying it elsewhere.
When to use
- You have a site and want to understand AI search as a discovery path.
- You are considering a GEO product or special files for every page.
Step by step
Choose real questions you can answer
List representative research, comparison and usage questions from target-user tasks, covering different wording and situations. Each should map to a page where you can provide evidence. Do not add unrelated encyclopedia material solely to gain mentions.
Keep public pages readable and discoverable
Check clear text, accessible links and accidental crawling blocks. Google’s supporting AI links have indexing and snippet-eligibility requirements. Check other platforms’ search and training crawlers separately rather than copying a universal allow list. Specific user-agent groups do not necessarily merge with wildcard rules. If a wildcard blocks /private/ but a separate Googlebot group allows /, do not assume the private restriction is inherited. Check the final matches for each public/private page and bot before adding broad Allow rules. Private access still requires authentication and server authorization.
Answer first, then show evidence and limits
Use headings tied to real questions, a direct opening answer, conditions, steps, examples, evidence and update dates. Numbers need sample, date and method. Keep material uncertainty and decision limits. Structured data must match visible content but is not required everywhere. Product snippet requirements depend on type and conditions; price, rating and SKU are not universally mandatory together. Never fabricate ratings. The linked Google AI-search guidance does not require dedicated schema or llms.txt; that does not establish identical rules for every platform.
Build independently checkable material
Publish actual experience, transparent research or reproducible samples and participate normally in relevant discussions. Third-party mentions may help discovery but do not guarantee engine citations. Fake reviews and inflated interaction are not evidence of authority.
Keep an observation panel with limitations
Repeat a fixed question set, recording date, platform, visible model/mode, response and actual citations. Also observe related visits and task completion. Manual and commercial monitoring have coverage limits; change does not establish causation. Fix question x platform x language/region x date. Separate brand mention, your URL being cited, clicks and completed tasks. Errors are incomplete queries and missing values are not zero. Report citations/effective answers plus planned counts and failures, using comparable batches. Start a new batch when the panel changes. Do not promise perfect manual accuracy, fixed endorsement ratios or a fixed time to results.
Worked example
Hypothetical example: a verifiable comparison and a small panel
Suppose a file-conversion comparison shows actual inputs, processing conditions, outputs and failure cases. Readers and search systems can understand the answer and evidence. Special files or structured data cannot replace that work, and eligibility does not guarantee indexing, citations or conversion. For an illustrative panel, ten questions across two platforms produce 20 planned queries. Two fail; of 18 valid answers, three mention the brand and two link to your pages. Report citations 2/18 and completion 18/20, retaining question-level records rather than claiming a global 10% citation rate. Four citations next week could reflect response variation; continue comparable observation alongside task data.

Actual cited link and context:
Content, crawling and indexing checks:

Fixed AI-search panel and four-week exercise
Question origin / task / page / intent / fixed wording:
Platform/mode / language/region / new-session conditions / date:
Planned queries__; valid__; failed__ with reasons__
Each result: brand mention? Our URL citation? Which passage? Actual link? Evidence location?
Summary: citations / effective answers; separately completed / planned
Clicks and task completion, unknown when attribution is unavailable:
Week 1: save baseline and inspect public content/crawl setup.
Week 2: improve one core answer with evidence and limits.
Week 3: publish an independently useful sample or study and discuss within community rules.
Week 4: repeat the same panel, recording failures, variation, product changes and other explanations.
Four weeks evaluates work and observation quality, not promised citations or causation.
Pitfalls
- Using GEO as a shortcut around product value and useful content.
- Copying unverified citation multipliers, effect ratios or fixed timelines.
- Confusing search crawling, training permission and access authorization; robots.txt is not privacy or access control.
