How can an AI product remember, correct and forget?

Separate history, character instructions, and user memory, then implement extraction, confirmation, storage, use, correction, and deletion.

Direct answer

Memory is not repeatedly sending the entire conversation to a model. A product can extract user information, save a profile, and use relevant parts in later conversations, but it should distinguish character settings, current context, full history, and durable user facts. A key-value store is only a starting point. Ownership, evidence, confirmation, updates, deletion, and acceptance checks are needed so remembering accurately and correcting mistakes matter alongside retention.

When to use

  • Users repeatedly state the same preferences and every session feels like a first meeting.
  • AI stores incorrect personal information or treats roleplay as user facts.
  • You are building companionship, an assistant, a learning coach, or personal-information retrieval.

Step by step

Define the small set worth retaining

Choose information relevant to a task, such as a name the user supplied, output preferences, or an active project. A temporary emotion, hypothetical, quotation, or model inference does not automatically become a long-term fact. Explain what is stored and where it is used and offer an off switch. Do not collect unrelated details just to demonstrate personalization.

Separate candidate information from confirmed facts

Extract candidates from the user’s words and retain message provenance and time. Let users add or confirm important information. Show contradictions instead of inventing a compromise. A character’s preferences belong to character configuration; the user’s preferences belong to user memory.

Record ownership and validity

Along with content, store owner, intended scope, evidence, updated time, and valid or inactive status; temporary information needs review or expiry conditions. Derive read/write access from server-verified identity rather than arbitrary user_id input. Start with the existing database and a complete small loop before considering specialized retrieval infrastructure.

Use valid memory only when relevant

Filter by owner and permission first, then retrieve relevant valid information with a length limit. Treat it as evidenced data separate from system rules, not as instructions granting new authority. History and memory can carry persistent prompt injection. Text separation alone is not a security guarantee; application code must still enforce tool permissions.

Support correction, deletion, and conflicts

Show users what is stored and let them correct, deactivate, or delete it. A newer user correction takes precedence over delayed automatic extraction; recheck conflicts. Deletion must address derived summaries, retrieval copies, and caches. If old conversations remain, prevent extraction from restoring information the user asked to forget, and explain the difference between history retention and memory deletion.

Verify across sessions and users

Save a preference for a test user, log in again, and check its use in a relevant task; change and delete it and repeat. Add another user, conflicting information, fictional scenarios, and unrelated tasks. Check for cross-account leakage, invention, and excessive personal references. Record failures instead of generalizing from one correct answer.

Separate ideas from personal evidence in book-based reflection

Define the book edition and scope first. A chapter-by-chapter review marks acquired, unavailable, and unprocessed chapters; a lightweight mapping of 8–12 themes does not claim full-book coverage. Store the book’s principle and location separately from confirmed personal records and from model inference and uncertainty. If no relevant personal evidence exists, say so instead of inventing an experience to fill a chapter. Map evidence before suggesting small actions and follow-up questions. New feedback needs confirmation before becoming memory.

Worked example

Hypothetical exercise: a learning assistant’s output preference

A user asks for examples before concepts. After confirmation, save this as an output preference linked to the message. When the user later asks for conclusions first, update the valid record; an older extraction job cannot overwrite the decision. After a forget request, stop adapting to that preference and prevent old history from restoring it. A character’s catchphrase stays in separate persona configuration.

For a hypothetical chapter on changing environmental cues, a user-confirmed record might say that leaving the phone outside the bedroom coincided with three on-time bedtimes in one week. Link the concept to that dated, limited observation and propose another week of observation. If another chapter concerns workplace conflict and no user record supports it, state that evidence is absent and offer an optional question. Do not assume the user has conflict with colleagues.

Action checklist

Reusable templates

AI memory feature specification

User task:
Small set of durable information to retain:
Explicitly excluded information:
Candidate provenance and confirmation method:
Fields: owner, content, purpose, evidence, update time, validity
Conflict and expiry rules:
Tasks where memory is retrieved, and tasks where it is not:
Inspect, correct, disable, and delete controls:
Handling old history, summaries, retrieval copies, and queued jobs after deletion:
Acceptance: remember across sessions → correction takes effect → deletion stops use; another user cannot read it; inference and roleplay do not become facts.
Reuse existing identity and database layers. Build the smallest complete loop before installing a memory framework.

Map book principles to confirmed personal evidence

Book, edition, and available scope:
Mode: [full chapter-by-chapter / lightweight 8–12 themes]
Coverage: chapter/theme | text acquired? | processed/unprocessed | missing material
Book column: accurate paraphrase | chapter/section/page or locatable reference
Personal-fact column: user-confirmed fact | record and date | scope; write “no evidence” if absent
Analysis: possible connection | reasoning | uncertainty | counterexample
Action: a small experiment the user chooses | observation | follow-up date
Follow-up: new evidence | user confirmation | older conclusions to update or retract
Do not turn book examples, model inference, or fiction into my experiences. Do not label a lightweight thematic version as full chapter-by-chapter coverage.

Pitfalls

  • A model guess cannot become a user fact and then be used to justify further guesses.
  • Saved chat history is not automatically a memory system; define extraction, update, and retrieval behavior.
  • Do not insert all profile content into high-authority instructions or let memory change tool authorization.
  • Reference photos can help visual consistency but cannot guarantee identical character images; test this capability independently.
