Estimating ad revenue without double-counting views

Match numerator and denominator: page RPM uses pageviews, while ad RPM uses ad impressions.

Direct answer

Match numerator and denominator: page RPM uses pageviews, while ad RPM uses ad impressions. Estimated revenue equals the matching count divided by 1,000 times its RPM. Do not multiply page-RPM estimates by ad-slot count again; estimated earnings are not final payment.

When to use

You need a revenue scenario or want to audit a calculation.

Step by step

Align period, currency, and counts

Record the period, currency, evidence type, and whether counts represent users, sessions, pageviews, or ad impressions. There is no universal UV-to-session-to-PV multiplier.

Choose one calculation path

Use PV with page RPM or ad impressions with ad RPM. When starting from users, expose assumptions about sessions and pages. An ad slot does not guarantee a billable impression.

Calculate ranges and costs

Test low and high scenarios and use actual reports for your own site. Separate hosting, APIs, acquisition, operations, invalid-traffic adjustments, exchange, and settlement differences from gross estimates.

Worked example

Hypothetical exercise, not a real performance claim.

With 30,000 monthly pageviews and page RPM of 4 currency units, estimated revenue is 120. Three ad slots are already reflected in that page RPM; multiplying again to get 360 double-counts them.

Pitfalls

Another site’s RPM and modeled traffic create only a scenario, not its income evidence. Averages across markets, devices, content, and time are not interchangeable.
